The State is the third most populated state in Brazil (after the Federal District and Rio de Janeiro) with a population density of 116 inhabitants per km2, which is much higher than the 64 inhabitants per km2 for Brazil, according to IBGE. In terms of employment, the 20.1 million employed population represents 62.7% of the state’s economically active population compared to 62% for Brazil. The unemployment rate in the metropolitan area reached 6.2% in May 2012, slightly higher than the average of the five largest Brazilian cities (5.8%).
